Light painting, also known as light drawing, is a photographic technique in which exposures are made at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. In many cases the light source itself does not have to appear in the image. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. Light painting can also take on the characteristics of a quick pencil sketch. Photographer Gjon Mili's collaboration with Pablo Picasso's resulted in his bull sketch, photographed in 1949.
Contemporary light painting is used for a variety of commercial means - from advertising campaigns to short animations. More approachable and eye-catching than conventional print, the glowing medium's intimate, organic feel can only be produced in the photo itself.
